Abstract It is shown that large-amplitude pulsation can occur in stars which are convective through most of the envelope. The opacity mechanism causes strong driving of the pulsation in the region outside the hydrogen-ionization zone, and the F-mechanism results in very low dissipation in the hydrogen zone. The phase relation between the bolometric luminosity and the variations in radius is similar to that of Cepheids. A relaxed fundamental pulsator is discussed in detail, and some overtone pulsators and two models close to dynamical instability are described briefly.
