Abstract
The dynamical generation of fermion mass at finite temperature is studied in the Gross-Neveu model and quantum chromodynamics, in a generalization of the approach of Nambu and Jona-Lasinio. The dynamical quark mass behaves, in leading-logarithm approximation, in exactly the same way as the dynamical fermion mass in the Gross-Neveu model. Chiral symmetry is restored in quantum chromodynamics via a second-order phase transition at $T=1.10\ensuremath{\Lambda}$.
