Abstract
Measurements of the electric field of one mode of a bidirectional FIR ring laser reveal phase modulation (optical frequency shifts) accompanying intensity pulsations. In the case of square-wave intensity pulsations the laser switches relatively abruptly among three distinct optical frequencies. These results are in remarkably close agreement with numerical solutions of a model for a bidirectional ring laser for which the polarization dynamics of the medium can be eliminated adiabatically.
