Abstract

On the basis of the formula representing the observed variation with latitude of the angular velocity of the Sun, combined with an assumption of axial symmetry, an assumption that the Sun is a perfect fluid near its surface, and the laws of Newtonian mechanics, it is possible to obtain numerical relations between two sets of small coefficients, one set representing the deviation of the Sun's gravitational field from that of a monopole and the other set representing the deviation of the shape of the Sun's surface from sphericity. No assumption, except the assumption of axial symmetry, is made concerning the interior of the Sun.
