Abstract

Recently, the application of high-Tc superconductor to a magnetic bearing has reached the second stage in some institutes and companies. The static stability of the levitation has already been established. However, the dynamic stability is still under research because the non-linear magnetic characteristics of HTSC and the permanent magnet system are not sufficiently understood. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a flywheel rotor suspended by HTSC magnetic bearing is discussed experimentally and numerically. The dynamics of the flywheel rotor shows an interesting gyroscopic motion under a hysteretic suspending force between HTSCs and permanent magnets. These types of dynamics have never been discussed before.
