Abstract

During operating, SMES system will suffer thermal load by AC losses and thermal disturbance which may cause unstable for HTS magnets. In this paper, dynamic thermal response of a conduction-cooled HTS SMES system in power exchanging and local heat disturbance condition is simulated to make comparison on cooling effect for different cooling configuration. 3-D SMES models based on heat conduction equation are established and solved with finite element methods. The results show the relationship between the cooling configuration and the transient stability of SMES system.
