Abstract
The multi-arch culvert is a new type of structure consisting of a series of two-hinge arch structures (single-arch system) made of precast concrete members, and its applicability to road embankment structures instead of elevated bridges has made it attractive. However, in a seismically active area like Japan, it is necessary to study the dynamic behaviour of multi-arch structure. In this study, a design for a multi-arch culvert is proposed as an alternative engineering method for elevated bridges. Dynamic FEM analysis has been carried out to investigate the influence of spacing between multi-arch culverts and the mechanical behaviour of the multi-arch culvert under seismic conditions has been discussed. Furthermore, the stability of the multi-arch culverts was examined by varying the spacing between them, key focus on variation of acceleration, stress, strain, bending-moment and displacements. Based on the analytical results obtained these analyses, the capacity of endurance of design for numerous multi-arch culvert tunnels is proposed.
