Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyse the performance and costs for harvest and handling of flax straw for short fibre production by means of a dynamic simulation model. In a case study, various scenarios were simulated for a fictitious processing plant in Laholm in southern Sweden. For a handling system based on round bales, it was shown that the total harvest and handling costs could be reduced by 18% by the use of a more optimal machinery system, while the variations in quality, expressed in terms of maturity and degree of retting, were reduced considerably.
