Abstract

The dynamic response of a one degree of freedom spherical structural system immersed in viscous fluid media is studied with the fluid forces obtained by Basset included in the differential equation of motion. The closed-form solution to the integrodifferential equation of motion of the system is obtained. Response curves are presented which illustrate the effect of the various parameters on the response of the system. The question of critical damping of the system in viscous fluid media is considered. Finally, the concept of degree of instability is presented and the influence of the fluid medium on the practical stability of specific structural systems is discussed.
