Abstract

Dynamic recrystallisation of Mg–6Zn–2Nd–0·5Zr alloy at temperature range from 543 to 693 K and strain rate from 0·001 to 1 s−1 are investigated. Flow softening is found to occur and all flow curves exhibit a peak with characteristics of dynamic recrystallisation and change significantly with temperature and strain rate. As a result of dynamic recrystallisation, the grains are greatly refined through dynamic recrystallisation, and the mean size of the recrystallised grain decreases with decreasing temperature or increasing Z parameter. By comparison of the grain sizes, 593 K is found to be the optimal deformation temperature. The yield strength and tensile strength of extruded Mg–6Zn–2Nd–0·5Zr alloy are 320 and 379 MPa respectively, higher than those of ZK60 alloy.
