Abstract

This investigation examines the effects of cam profile errors on the dynamic behaviour of semi-rigid follower cam systems. The lift function is simulated stochastically, and integrated with a refined dynamic system model. It takes into account the lift error, which is considered to consist of a variable-mean size error and a superimposed waviness. The study has demonstrated that for semi-rigid follower systems, the combined effects of system flexibility and cam profile errors are significantly greater than that of flexibility alone, and that the effects of profile errors are dominating. The dynamic response is critically dependent on the waviness of the lift error, whereas a looser tolerance can be permitted for the size error.
