Abstract
The construction industry is one of the riskiest sectors of production; it suffers from numerous deaths and injuries every year. As large amounts of compensation are spent on construction accidents, it is necessary to review the factors which impact the amount of compensation in court. In academic terms, analysis of accident compensation has usually depended on studies provided by the labour department in the past, none of the previous researches in this area has utilised the dynamic panel technique to study the relationships involved. The court case reports recorded that most victims’ monthly salary fell below HK$20,000 and they aged between 30 and 49. The results show that non-Cantonese speakers receive less compensation than locals do and more extensive hearings are associated with a more significant amount of compensation. There was, however, no significant difference between victims who had and did not have a mental disorder.
