Abstract

Specific heat measurements on 2H-TaS2 single crystals have been carried out between 0.3 and 3 K using the ac calorimetry technique. An upturn in the normal-state data, obtained below 1 K in a 50-kG applied magnetic field, was observed to depend on the measuring frequency. It may be ascribed to a nuclear contribution with a relaxation rate directly proportional to absolute temperature. The basic parameters of the superconducting state have been determined, showing that the material is a very anisotropic, three-dimensional, type II superconductor. The broad transition observed in the heat capacity measurements cannot be analyzed in terms of fluctuations, but rather results from inhomogeneity effects.
