Abstract
A specialized training machine, known as a rowing machine or kayak ergometer is used for kayak paddler's indoor training. However, conventional ergometers do not focus on accurately reproducing the feeling of paddling resistance experienced in kayaking on the water, hence kayak paddlers have a risk of learning a paddling form specific to the ergometer. The aim of this study was to develop a new type of kayak ergometer. The developed ergometer has a function to control the paddling load and to estimate the kayak speed on water based on the motion equations of both the kayak and ergometer. In addition, the paddling of kayakers can be measured by a sensorized paddle equipped with motion and force sensors. The evaluation experiment was conducted on kayak paddlers under two conditions: a constant load condition and a water load condition. We confirmed that the ergometer has the potential to evaluate paddler’s skill and competitive performance from the experiment.
