Abstract

The Co/Ni and Co/Ni-TiCN coatings were prepared on B4C ceramic matrix by reactive plasma spraying method with Co/Ni alloy powders and Ti-graphite agglomerated powders. The dynamic impact resistance of the B4C ceramic without/with coatings were investigated. Compared with Co/Ni coating, the Co/Ni-TiCN coatings presented higher hardness and more porosities because of TiCN phase formation besides Co-Ni-Cr-Mo phase. At the strain rate of 700 s−1 or 1500 s−1, the peak stress, stress wave and energy reflectivity of B4C increased after preparing coatings, while the stress wave and energy transmittance decreased. The impact resistance of B4C ceramic with Co/Ni-TiCN coatings was better than that of Co/Ni coating, which was mainly because of the more phase interfaces and pores.
