Abstract

Strain gage technique and the method of photoelastic-coatings as applied to dynamic fracture mechanics are presented. Dynamic fracture experiments are conducted on heat-treated 4340 steel and 7075-T6 aluminum with face grooved SEN specimen geometries. The mirror like reflective coating used in conjunction with focused light is the key to obtaining clear isochromatic fringe pattern. Instantaneous stress intensity factors as a function of crack length are obtained independently from both the methods and compared.
