Abstract

The emitted microwave radiation from long Josephson junctions biased at both zerofield steps and Fiske steps has been measured. It appears that the radiation spectra observed on either type of current singularity are identical. Consequently we are led to the conclusion that the same mechanism, i.e. propagating fluxons, is responsible for both types of current steps. In this paper we present experimental evidence as well as numerical calculations showing that for a long Josephson junction the Fiske steps may indeed be interpreted as the dc-manifestation of fluxon propagation.
