Abstract

Dynamic dithering algorithm and frame rate control technique is presented which are applied to the liquid crystal display controller. There are dithering unit and frame rate control unit in the liquid crystal display controller. The dithering unit performs dynamic dithering algorithm on pixel data to advantageously increase smoothness of an image on the display. The frame rate control unit is responsive to the dither unit and performs frame rate control technique to generate more gray-shades, which can reduce flicker and visual artifacts. Results show that the gray shades displayed on images up to 256 on monochrome passive LCD panels or 2563 colors on color passive LCD panels using dynamic dithering algorithm and frame rate control technique if each encoded pixel data is 8 bits. Simulations show that the images displayed on the flat-panel display have desirable gray-shades and very little flicker and visual artifacts.
