Abstract
The dynamic consolidation technique consists basically of dropping a heavy pounder of up to 4 x 10 4 kg from a height varying between 50 to 148 ft. The weight, height of fall, number of drops per pass and number of passes to achieve required compaction levels depend on thickness of ground to be compacted, nature of soil, groundwater level and consistency of material underlying soil to be compacted. This technique has been successfully used in Singapore to improve properties of loose ground by deep compaction for different types of soils (such as silty clay, peaty clay and dredged granular fill) up to about 26 ft in depth. From experience gained from various compaction jobs, the dynamic consolidation method can provide a quick and economical solution to a variety of deep compaction problems.
