Abstract

The phenomenon of stick-slip oscillations of the feed drives of machine tools is an important problem in the designing of a hydraulic feed system because of its low stiffness. The basic equations of the slider motion on a machine tool guideway when some amount of air is included in the hydraulic system are set up, and solved numerically by Runge-Kutta-Gill method. The results obtained are in fairly good agreement with experimental ones, and they clarify the influences of various parameters of the hydraulic feed system on the characteristics of stick-slip motion. To prevent the slider from stick-slip motion, the use of a pressure compensating type flow control valve, a lubricant with little difference between static and kinetic friction, and rigid driving elements is recommended, and air should be excluded perfectly from the hydraulic system.
