Abstract

Sampled data techniques are used to examine the small signal characteristics of the series-parallel resonant converter in both the continuous and discontinuous parallel capacitor voltage modes of operation. The fourth-order characteristics of the converter are found to reduce to third order as the converter enters the discontinuous operating mode. The design and performance of an output voltage regulation loop is investigated for two converter designs: (a) operating solely in the continuous mode, and (b) operating in the discontinuous mode at full load. The latter is found to provide superior performance over a wide operating range.
