Abstract

In this paper, the outstanding fail-safe characteristics of the front- and rear-wheel independent-drive type electric vehicle (FRID EV) were clarified through dynamic analyses when the drive system failed while running under various road conditions. To show the predominance of the FRID EV, dynamic analyses were carried out for comparison with conventional inwheel motor type EVs. In order to verify the fail-safe characteristics of the FRID EV under all running conditions, the analysis conditions classified the danger at the time of failure into three categories. The analyzed results showed that the FRID EV had outstanding fail-safe performance exceeding that of the conventional EVs under all types of failure conditions. Finally, the fail-safe effect on the failure during rotating which is a highly dangerous situation was verified using a prototype FRID EV.
