Abstract

This paper addresses how to transform from an existing business ecosystem to a new one in a rapidly changing business environment. In recent years, business ecosystems have become more and more important to create various values for customers. In changing environment, firms have to create the new business ecosystem’s capabilities such as robustness, productivity, and niche creation, but it is not easy. Microsoft Azure IoT is a typical success case to create the new business ecosystem by transforming the existing ecosystem. This paper analyzes this case from dynamic capability and ambidexterity viewpoints, and proposes the 4D (Detection, Derivation, Direction, and Diversion) process model. The proposed model contributes to business ecosystem research by introducing dynamic capability and ambidexterity into the traditional static business ecosystem model. Firms can logically understand how to transform their business ecosystem to fit their business environment by using this model.
