Abstract
An important criterion for the design of fast-ramping accelerator magnets is their field distribution in the time-transient regime. Eddy current effects in different components of the magnet become more or less significant depending on the field level, the ramp rate, the magnet geometry, and the materials used. In this paper, we focus on eddy currents in solid tension bars of laminated magnets and quantify their effects based on finite-element simulations of a dipole model magnet. Several configurations are studied to derive empirical laws for the dynamic behavior of the magnets. The simulation results are validated with magnetic measurements.
