Abstract

The use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is widely advocated for the treatment of head and neck cancers to increase the therapeutic ratio. IMRT is delivered with a multileaf collimator (MLC) either in dynamic mode (DMLC or sliding window) or in segmental mode (SMLC or step-and-shoot).This report aims to compare the volumetric and dosimetric parameters between the two methods of IMRT delivery. Objectives: To compare conformality index, homogeneity index, quality of coverage, lesion coverage factor, conformation number and integral dose between DMLC and SMLC IMRT plans; To compare the mean parotid dose, maximum spinal cord dose, beam-on time (MU or monitor units), treatment delivery time and the fluence dosimetric parameters.
