Abstract

In this work, a dynamic analysis of a natural gas distribution network is performed exploiting a flexible Modelica framework. The case study focuses on the Italian grid with the aim of providing useful indications for optimization tasks. Through linearization and model order reduction, a simplified model of the network is obtained to evaluate the governing time constants with which pressures propagate along the network after rotational speed changes of the compression stations. Further indications are provided regarding compression stations mutual interactions. The analysis is validated considering simplified network models and specific tests on the entire network. The proposed approach can also be applied to systems of comparable size and complexity that can transport hydrogen and hydrogen mixtures.
