Abstract

A macroscopic model of the effects of radiation on tissue is developed from a description in space, time, and energy of the chemical reactions that constitute direct and indirect attack as well as repair. The model assumes first-order kinetics. The resulting equations are combined through a process of differentiation and substitution to obtain a single analytic expression, the dynamic response equation. Solution of this equation allows calculation of the parameter plotted in dose response studies and is used here to show that the surviving fraction depends on both dose and dose rate.
