Abstract
The ABG SEMCA, specialists in air-conditioning machinery, has considered the concept of small turbines with high rotation speeds (50 000–80 000 r/min). Air radial and thrust bearings are particularly well adapted for this kind of turbine. The load on the thrust bearing can be directed on one way or en the other. Therefore two thrust bearings are needed in order to support a bidirectional load However, some problems of stability have been found in the non-loading thrust bearing. This paper deals with a dynamic analysis of a thrust bearing and outlines the bad effects of misalignment on the unloaded thrust bearing and the importance of the sector angle on stability.
