Abstract

The modeling and dynamic analysis of the turbocharger (TC) rotor supported over floating ring bearings (FRB) along with auxiliary gas foil bearing (GFB) is focused in the present analysis, which are exclusively meant for high-speed applications. Generally, floating ring bearings are used in TC rotor due to their large reaction forces. To know the influence of an auxiliary gas foil bearing in event of any floating ring bearing failure, the study considers the resultant response from the exhaust gas emission loads. The dynamic response of the rotor-bearing system under unbalance, time-varying bearing reaction forces as well as gyroscopic forces is obtained from finite element (FE) modeling. The equations of motion of multi-degree of freedom model of turbocharger rotor are solved with time integration scheme. The effects of the exhaust emission and auxiliary gas foil bearing on the overall system dynamics are studied.
