Abstract

The text presents two sources concerning the political views and mentality of the Polish Catholic intelligentsia in the first years of the People's Republic of Poland. The first is a memorandum from the „Dziś i Jutro” group to Władysław Gomułka, presenting its political aspirations and concepts, aiming to create a co-governing Catholic party in Poland. The second is a study of the situation in the country, addressed to the Polish authorities in exile, with an emphasis on the views of lay Catholics disillusioned with insurrectionist and anti-Russian concepts. These documents allow one to understand not only the dilemmas and ideological choices of Catholics at the time but also provide an important contribution to the genesis of later disputes among Catholic circles in communist Poland.
