Abstract

Abstract Loss practitioners in the process industries have developed a suite of safety measures to prevent the occurrence of dust explosions, or to mitigate the potential consequences. This chapter provides an overview of the protection methodologies that are specific to dust deflagration and explosion hazards. Normative engineering standards commonly used in North America are introduced along with some of the key considerations and challenges faced by industry in implementing the prescriptive safety measures that exemplify good engineering practice. The topics of inherently safer design, hazardous area classification, and the control of electrostatic ignition hazards are also discussed.
