M. ; Gatley, I. ; Werner, M. W. ; Elias, J. H. ; Evans, N. J., II ; Zuckerman, B. ; Morris, G. ; Sato, T. ; Litvak, M. M. Abstract The Orion Nebula region has been mapped over a 3' X 6' region in the continuum at 1 mm and in the 2ii 212 transition of H2CO at 2 cm. The similarity of the two maps is strong evidence that the 1-mm radiation originates in the molecular cloud. The column density of hydrogen molecules through the cloud, derived from the R1CO results, is 2 X 1023 cm-2 dust associated with this amount of gas would produce sufficient thermal emission to account for the observed 1-mm continuum radiation. The mass of the region observed is estimated to be 500 M0. The radial velocities and linewidths of the H2CO emission are discussed with respect to collapse, rotation, and turbulence.
