Abstract

By extremely rapid cooling of the Ni-Ge, Pd-Ge and Pt-Ge alloy melts, interesting new solid phases can be obtained. During the solidification of Pt-Ge alloys in the concentration range between 22 and 24 at.% Ge, a new high temperature phase, Pt 3Ge(h) having the Ir 3Si structure ( a = 5.499(1) A ̊ , c = 7.933(1) A ̊ ), occurs. In the Pd-Ge system the existence of Pd 5Ge(h) (W type), as well as the occurrence of a glassy alloy having the stoichiometric composition Pd 80Ge 20, was confirmed. By rapid crystallization in the Ni-Ge system, the phase Ni 3Ge was obtained (Cu 3Au type). The conditions for the formation of metallic glasses in the systems investigated are discussed.
