Abstract

A summary of the evolution of the mortar durability theory in a nordic environment, and its application to the fortification walls of quebec over the last 15 years: the climatological context, the salt environment,the principal mechanisms of mortar deterioration caused by freeze-thaw cycles, and results of the humidity and temperature monitoring programme (started by parks canada in 1983), treatments for durability improvements from 1970 to the present, are reviewed.
