Abstract

Duplex machining is the use of two cutting tools simultaneously on a lathe machine, placed diametrically opposite and in inverted position to each other in the horizontal plane. The cutting forces of the two tools act opposite to each other and gets neutralised. This prevents deflection and vibration in the workpiece. The metal removal is split between two tools; hence the force on each side is halved. The cross slide of a centre lathe machine is modified for duplex machining. The experimental study of effects of duplex machining on diameter error along the axis of workpiece, limiting width of cut and surface roughness is presented in this paper. It is observed that duplex machining minimises diameter error, increases limiting width of cut and improves surface finish compared to conventional single tool turning.
