Abstract

A new technique called self-injection is a low-cost, fairly simple method to improve the performance of commercial Q-switched (QS) or mode-locked (ML) pulsed laser. The principle of self-injection can be briefly explained: by electro-optically (E-O) modulating the cavity losses, for example, by a E-O QS it is possible to create, just after the QS laser action has started, a coherent seed pulse shorter than the usual QS output that can be created in the space between the E-O and the output coupler.
