Abstract

Parametric study is carried out by numerical and experimental work to investigate some ductility parameters on I-shaped steel members such as steel grade, flange width-thickness, and member slenderness. Inelastic behavior and local buckling, as well as member buckling, are considered in a steel member subject to uniform bending moment. Assumed stress–strain relationship with nominal values of yield stress and tensile stress is shown to provide lower ductility ratio. The influences of flange width-thickness and member slenderness as major factors affecting the member ductility are formulated. Variation due to these ductility parameters on the flexural moment capacity and the curvature ductility are also presented. Based on this study, simplified formulas involving these parameters are presented to determine curvature ductility, rotational ductility, and displacement ductility of I-shaped steel members.
