Abstract

The cleavage mechanisms of brittle fracture associated with twinning have been well documented, and fatigue crack initiation at annealing twin boundaries and propagation at mechanical twin boundaries are widely found. However, few detailed observations on the change in the characteristics on fracture surfaces associated with twinning and testing temperature have been carried out. Twinning occurs in a wide range of temperatures in ferritic Fe-Cr-Ni alloy, and the fracture surface of this alloy was only noted as cleavage without providing a fractograph. Twinning is also responsible for the embrittlement of this alloy at 475 C. The fracture features associated with twinning at different temperatures and the effect of twins on deformation and ductile fracture in an annealed Fe-22Cr-5Ni alloy are investigated in this work.
