Abstract

Fibroadenoma is the most common benign tumor of the breast. It is a mixed neoplasm with epithelial and stromal components. Fibroadenoma may be associated with fibrocystic changes, proliferative epithelial changes, and extremely rarely, with non-invasive and invasive cancer. Malignancy rates for the epithelial component reported in the literature are very low (0. 3%). This is a rare case report of a patient 58 year-old with a 4 cm tumor located in upper lateral quadrant of left breast. No suspect lymph nodes was palpable in the ipsilateral axilla. Mammography showed lobulated nodules of 21-50 mm. We performed a core-biopsy compatible with fibroadenoma. The patient was submitted to local excision of node in the left breast. The pathoanatomical examination revealed invasive ductal carcinoma was within the fibroadenoma, free margins of 0. 1 cm. Performed expansion of margins and sentinel lymph node, with negative results. Despite the low percentage of carcinoma occurring within fibroadenoma we consider that each lump should be seriously managed; extirpation and histological examination is recommended.
