Abstract

A dual-point optical fiber sensor based on miniature S fiber taper (SFT) cascaded with fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for refractive index (RI) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. By utilizing the broad free spectral ranges and the regular interference notches in the sinusoidal transmission spectra of the SFTs, the multiplexing capability of the sensor can be easily realized by cascading the SFTs with peak-notch interlaced transmission spectra. Experimental results show that the RI sensitivities of the sensing point 1 and sensing point 2 reach 459.974 nm/RIU and 420.781 nm/RIU, respectively, during the partial measurement range of 1.3540–1.3810. The proposed RI sensor has the advantages of compact sensing region, well-defined interference pattern and high RI sensitivity, which can be used as an economic RI sensor with multiplexing capability.
