Abstract

On the basis of our own experimental results and data available in the literature, we propose a phenomenological model of the dual character of the influence of hydrogen that takes into account its plasticizing and embrittling action on deformation and fracture of metals. Based on this model, we have formulated new criteria on the basis of which one can develop hydrogen-resistant chromium–nickel steels and obtain analytic dependences for predicting their mechanical characteristics in hydrogen from those determined in air. The plasticizing action of hydrogen has been used is some technological methods of increasing the workability and durability of steel articles.
