Abstract

A novel dual-polarized endfire antenna is proposed in this paper. The antenna is operated in Ka-band and is fully printed. By combining a fish-bone-shaped structure for horizontal polarization (HP), and a mushroom-shaped structure for vertical polarization (VP), this planar antenna supports two orthogonally polarized surface wave modes. Then, by tapering these structures, a smooth transition between both the waveguide to the antenna and the antenna to free space is achieved. Therefore, it achieves a high gain radiation with a large bandwidth. The measured results show that a peak realized gain of 16.9 dBi for HP, and 16.0 dBi for VP is achieved. The measured 3 dB gain bandwidth is 36.3% for HP, and 24.4% for VP. This antenna is also thin (1.5 mm), narrow in terms of size (5 mm), and lightweight (1.1 g). These features make this antenna a good candidate for replacing the dielectric rod of the dielectric rod antenna.
