Abstract

The Integrated High Payoff Rocket Propulsion Technology (IHPRPT) Dual Movable Nozzle Thrust Vector Control Program, sponsored by the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, NAWCWD, China Lake, was established to combine conventional external fin aerodynamic control with solid rocket motor thrust vector control (TVC) to improve tactical missile agility. The system uses two omni-axial movable nozzles for high-agility 3-axis (pitch, yaw, roll) control in all flight regimes. Dual blast tube assemblies integrated into a common aft motor closure allow for efficient packaging. A compact electromechanical control actuation system (CAS), and a unique patented linkage that couples the motions of the nozzles and fins are packaged around the Dual Nozzle hardware. The program has completed the design and hardware development phases. CAS hardware has been manufactured and is currently undergoing bench level testing with a Dual Nozzle bench test system. The program will culminate with a static test of the CAS and Dual Moveable Nozzle system on a 7 diameter tactical rocket motor. Testing will be conducted at the NAWCWD/China Lake test facility.
