Abstract

A high Ni-low Co LiNi0.95Co0.04Mn0.01O2 cathode for lithium-ion batteries is modified by a combination of bulk W-doping and surface Mn-doping. Such a dual-modification is realized through a facile treatment of the W-doped precursor by KMnO4 solution. X-ray diffraction and electron scanning microscopy reveal that the crystallographic structure and morphology are not changed by the dual-modification. Electrochemical measurements prove the merits of the dual-modified cathode, including excellent cycling stability and improved rate capability. Moreover, differential capacity analysis demonstrates that the improved electrochemical properties result from the enhanced structural stability and suppressed polarization endowed by the dual-modification.
