Abstract

Diabetic wounds afflict numerous patients due to poor healing and risk of amputation, mainly caused by abnormal inflammatory conditions and peripheral vascular disease. Herein, we designed a dual functional electrospun membrane consisting of polycaprolactone/sulfated chitosan nanofibers and polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles to assist diabetic wound healing. The vascular endothelial growth factor binds with sulfated chitosan and loaded in the nanofibers for revascularization. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging ability of PDA nanoparticles sprayed on the surface of nanofibers is verified by 1,1-diphenyl-2-trinitrophenylhydrazine method (DPPH method). The in vivo experiments confirmed the dual functional electrospun membrane could alleviate inflammation and promote diabetic wound healing. Such a membrane with anti-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic effects could be a promising candidate for diabetic chronic wound care.
