Abstract

Present practice in the design of asynchronous drive system is primarily directed towards modifications in the control circuit of the converter unit to achieve reduced ripples in the power supply waveform, so that the ill-effects of time-harmonics on the operation of the induction motors can be obviated. An alternative approach given in this paper points to the possibility of designing specially dedicated windings, which enable gainful use of time-harmonics in the supply profile for the production of aiding torques. Some attractive features of this approach are that the constraints on the design of converter circuit are eased considerably, while at the same time the hitherto undesirable time-harmonics are actually used with advantage, thus making the system energy efficient. This approach has been named as ‘Dual Convergence Approach’.
