Abstract

A wavelength converter composed of an optical single-sideband modulator and arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) is proposed. The amount of wavelength shift applied by this converter can be controlled by optical switches, and the conversion is independent of the signal format. A 125-GHz wavelength conversion using a 25-GHz channel spacing AWG has been conducted for 5- and 10-Gb/s signals. Moreover, two signals with different wavelengths can be simultaneously converted. The degradation factors are clarified and the limitation of the wavelength shift is discussed.
