Abstract
A dual band printed microstrip patch antenna is proposed in this paper which operates at 2.5 GHz and 5.8 GHz which can be used for wireless cordless phones applications. The antenna is designed and fabricated using FR-4 substrate having a dielectric constant of 4.1 and thickness of 1.5 millimeter (mm). The antenna design consists of two patches interconnected with each other and meant for dual frequency operation with the outer patch resonates at 2.5 GHz and the inner patch resonates at 5.8GHz respectively. A 50 Ω coaxial line is used to feed the antenna at the inner patch. The antenna consists of ground plane of same size as that of substrate and has a compact size of 30 mm × 40 mm. The radiation characteristics of the proposed antenna are bidirectional with good simulated return loss lower than -10 dB. The antenna is simulated using electromagnetic (EM) simulation software. The measured results show good agreement with the simulation predictions. For its light weight, low manufacturing cost, ease of designing and small size properties this antenna can be easily integrable in portable communication devices. This antenna can be used in wireless phones for commercial applications.
