Abstract

ABSTRACT Drawing on the two theoretical concepts of ‘dual and multiple identity’ and ‘stigmatisation’, this study investigates how 12 Chinese university teacher translators navigate the stigma associated with translating rainbow works or works related to the LGBTQI+ community. The research identified trade-offs and compromises in navigating several different identities as a ‘translator of rainbow works’: namely, the ‘filial son’; the ‘accomplished overseas returnee’; and the ‘well qualified friend’. The analysis reveals crises and dilemmas, exposing significant pressure from stigmatisation across familial, interpersonal, societal, and professional domains. This challenges the assumption of there being a uniform endorsement of the rainbow community by the translators of rainbow works, providing insights for the strengthening of self-identity and promoting the mental health development of translators in this field.
