Dual-action vertical intraarch technique: A multifocal technique for open bite correction

Abstract

The dual action vertical intra-arch technique (DAVIT) is an innovative non-compliant multifocal mechanics for open bite correction. It is based on simultaneous posterior intrusion and anterior extrusion, which can occur at similar or different rates according to the patient's needs. This report presents the clinical handling of this innovative mechanics. The occlusal and cephalometric effects of the DAVIT device are shown by the treatment of an open bite Class III malocclusion. Six months after DAVIT placement, the open bite was corrected by increasing the overbite 5.1 mm. Dentoalveolar changes associated with open bite correction with DAVIT included maxillary molar intrusion, maxillary incisor extrusion and palatal tipping, uprighting of maxillary posterior teeth, and maxillary occlusal plane rotation. Maxillary incisor exposure and smile esthetics improved significantly. DAVIT efficiency seems to be associated with its non-compliant multifocal mechanical action, which can be adjusted according to the patient's occlusal and esthetic needs.
